Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter Natalie Cole died in L.A. on Thursday at age 65, according to a statement from her family.

CBS News reports that Cole died of congestive heart failure at Cedar Sinai Hospital after battling years of health problems, including substance abuse, hepatitis and kidney failure.

The daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole, Cole won nine Grammy Awards for her work, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year in 1992.

Cole’s family released a statement about her passing on Friday:

“It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our Mother and sister’s passing. Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived ... with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever.
