America freaked out yesterday when a new terrorist meme surfaced, a mock movie poster promising "Al Qaeda: Coming Soon Again in New York." Much of the concern over this Photoshop of Doom was sparked over its strangely slick 3D appearance. But it turns out 3D graphic design is super trendy in the world of Islamic militant message boards.
The "Coming Soon Again in New York" image was posted on Monday to the Ansar al Mujahiddin Arabic Forum (AMAF), which is allegedly connected to the Taliban. But it was posted in the forum's "art and design" section, and the user who posted it made no reference to any actual terrorist plot. He was probably just showing off his aptitude with the 3D modeling program Cinema 4D.
AMAF is enamored with Cinema 4D, which can retail for as much as $1600. They've posted a tutorial ("Cinema 4D, what sets it apart from others?"), and the art and design section of AMAF has been churning out 3D promotional material, apparently hoping to move beyond the dismal cut-and-paste jobs that comprised past terrorist aesthetics. Let's take a look at some of the images from AMAF.
Most of them are models of guns, with arabic text. If you didn't know better, you'd think a Call of Duty fanboy made it to use as his PC desktop.
I call this one "Marshmallow Words and Fluorescent Lights."
That giant 3D word just killed a man.
