karl, I think at the moment you posted your comment you were not particularily sharp, so I forgive you for calling my heartfelt letter "total crap."

I wrote it in response to an e-mail from Ben Popken, the editor of Consumerist: "I was wondering if you had any comments about Laurelle's resignation letter that we posted?." My letter was an explanation of why I didn't post a comment. And Ben posted it... Which is fine, because other than calling me "lurker" his words were kind.

As were my words for Laurelle. Karl, did you not notice that I validated the things she was saying?

(BTW, I have since researched facts of the case, and checked statistics. At the time L was 21. She was making what is the average wage for retail salespersons and clerks in Montreal. Which was roughly equivalent or slightly higher than what the garment workers in LA were making at the same time. And the average hourly wage for sales supervisors was $2 higher than hers, but well within acceptable range.)

Why is it so hard for you to believe that someone might think that learing about business by working for a start-up is a valuable experience? MBA schools cost a lot of money. Working with the management of a successful young company? Priceless. For me, anyway.

As for calling the garment workers "pet mexicans"... You must have been really angry to type something like this. Let it go Karl. So you worked for AA and it didn't work out. Put it behind you and move on.

Good luck.
Weronika Cwir

I maybe hunger over and slightly out of it, but I am sharp enough to see the PR flack response from AA is total crap. Its typical of the organization, don't answer questions, just romanticize the situation! Its a learning experience! I want to learn about your "by the seat of our tight pants" business plan! yay!

I was still employed by American Apparel when that letter made its way around the company, and as I said when it first appeared on the Consumerist; its 100% true. As much fun as I had getting paid to be unwashed and stylish, getting any money out of that company for seniority or hard work is like getting blood from a stone.

She claims to know about the ACTUAL distribution of money in that company, yet she offers no details about it or about why they were unable to compensate letter writer properly. Its because Dov is to busy trying to get good PR by paying his factory of pet mexicans as much as possible.

Take everything in the resignation letter to heart, its just a few of the many ways that the Upper management continually shits on the retail staff.
karl hungus
